For those interested. XH558 (The Vulcan) got signed off today by the CAA. She then flew over to Waddington and did her 3 approval flights for her show permit.
She WILL be flying at the Waddington airshow this week-end.
Can't miss this one so will be attending on Saturday!!
bob t 1894:
Cant wait to see that old girl back in the sky, Steve. Can I just recommend anyone interested in the Vulcan to read 'Vulcan 607' by Rowland White, the story of the attack on Port Stanley. What an epic!

Does anyone have any experience of the petrol engines being produced by various Chinese manufacturers. Eg MT, Thor, RCGF, CRRC etc. The MT engines look good and other forums are favourable. Looking to join the "Big Boys" but I am on a budget
Paul:
I have just purchased a pair of crrcpro 50's One is currently installed in a 90" 1930's racer style aeroplane and awaiting a weekend when it doesn't either blow a force 10 gale or rain..or both. First impressions are very good. The build quality is respectable incorporating a double ringed piston and a full compliment of three bearings supporting the crankshaft. The engines seem to be very well thought out and they start uncannily easily and appear to run very smoothly The exhaust can supplied really needs copper or steel baffles inserting inside the exsisting outlets as they a far too noisy otherwise. That is as much as I can pass on until I get the opportunity to try it in the air. Hopethis helps.

DB:
Got a Thor from Inwoods. Nice easy to start motor. I quite like it. Needed a few hours of running in and then it was fine.

Good morning all---2 weeks today, the organising team will be moving into Cosford to set up the site----a big thanks to all who have offered help, but if anyone else would like to help and stay over from Thursday, please contact me,space is limited so please dont turn up without speaking to me first. When the model storage marquees were booked back in January,i felt sure we could accomodate all the usual number of aircraft, but i am a little concerned with the vast numbers of aircraft booking in at a later stage--i realise many shows dont supply overnight storage, but Cosford has always had one of the best facilities----has anyone access to small marquees/decent gazeebos etc, which could be erected for Sat evening to extend our storage of models---also,anyone who can store their models in awnings etc would help-----lets pray for SUNSHINE and LIGHT WINDS

Colin Smith:
Dave, it might be worth giving your local Scout troop or ATC a shout regarding large tents.
|
DAVE JOHNSON 309:
Den--thanks for the offer--we have the manpower ,will be in touch.Colin--thanks for that idea,we have scouts/atc on site, will check with them.
|
Stuart Mc Farlane:
Hi Dave,
Just a thought but have you enquired through the museum about the possibility of getting some 12'X 12' tents. I know they are on site it is just a case of getting them and putting them up. Alternately have you tried your contacts at RAF Shawbury, they also have them on site. I could maybe lend a hand on the Friday to demonstrate / help erect if you get any. Hope this helps in the meantime any problems please ring me 01952 200592
or e-mail me.

 Hi Chaps
Glad to see normal service as been returned, thanks to all involved for getting the wheels back on ! Can anyone help me out, I need to make a large building board 1/3 scale Sopwith Triplane size. I have spoken to Ian who recomends Sundela boards, unfortunatley these do not exsist in Portugal, other than am old door does anyone have any good tips for a good building board ( material) that is.
Clock is running for Cosford, see you all there.
Jez I heard about the Pup at wings and wheels, hope you get it repaired soon.
Dave
Dave Tregaskes 2474:
Dave,
Earlier this year I brought back some material from Portugal for building boards!
It is a very dense polystyrene type material about 40mm thick used for roof insulations, coloured pale blue and available up to 3.6 metres long by about 750mm wide. the sheets have edge rebates and will interlock.
I don't recall the name but found it in a Builders/DIY store called MaxMat. If you find one locally, check it out.
|
Dave Whiston 3015:
Dave
did you get it in the Algarve, I am in Lisbon but if needs, I can drive down there and get some !
|
Barrie Burton lma 23:
I used an indoor ply faced door. They are flat, light and large.Make sure that it is not a hardboard faced door, sticking pins in can be a problem with that type.
Barrie B
|
bob t 1894:
Not sure you would get a flush door in the Algarve- European doors are usually ornate and unsuitable. A quality piece of ply or blockboard is ok and lay on top of that a plasterboard 6x3 - or 8x4 if you want it massive,- takes pins readily, is flat and you can draw on it!
|
Dave Tregaskes 2474:
Dave,
Maxmat - I got mine in Portalegre, but there are five stores in the Lisbon/Sintra area. Have alook at Maxmat.pt for all the store locations.
|
geoff dales:
the 1/3 scale sopwith triplane you re going to build is it own design or plan. if its a plan where was it bought . would be interested in a copy myself its on my to build list
|
Dave Whiston 3015:
Hi Geoff
the Triplane in question is a 1/3 scale version of the model designed and built by Mike Booth. Mike has generously given permision to use his original plans. Mike's aircraft almost got a perfect score at the US Topgun , so this is a "top draw build". If you want any info on the plans or laser cut parts call Leon at Belair. also if you want scale detail check my web page wizzoplanes.com in the research area.

Glad its back
Question for the technicals.
Wondered if there are any problems with using 2.4 on different parts of an airfield i.e Nationals have seperate classes with set frequencies on 35 megs but how does 2.4 sort it out when although the transmitters could be a mile a part and at ground level not within range of each other, the aircraft from each sites could be quite a lot closer DB
Will 3958:
There is an intersting article on page 14 of the July issue of RCM&E. 100 planes were flying simultaneously on a field in Atlanta, Georgia and of these, 59 were on 2.4GHz and working together during a range check with no problems.
Hope this helps.
|
DBrown:
Thank you . Will get a copy
DB
|
bob t 1894:
Quite a point, DB. When at the Nats last year, we were warned that, as the runway has a 'bump' in the middle, a 2.4 tx could be out of sight on the other end of the runway, and cause problems with a possibility of a model taking off and 'seeing' two trannies transmitting the same frequency! The Nats is the only show I can think of where this could occur. There may be a problem with slope soarers, too, as they tend to wander all over the hills....

I think the LMA forum is unique as far as web forums go. Most people communicating on the site know each other and the amount of advice and assistance for member's problems is of tremendous value. This is what the forum is for and we cannot afford to lose it. After viewing other forums relating to various matters I think ours is probably the most sensible, a bit of humour and leg pulling is,of course, most necessary but let us keep it civilised. Don't forget, our web contributions may be read by anyone in the world and the LMA must not be put into disrepute.
Glad to see the forum back!!
Bob Thompson 1894:
hear, hear Dave. I think the vast majority of members (and non-members) would agree with that sentiment.
